Hi all,
Magna TS 3.0 1994 SE
Long story, so grab a beer sit back and have a laugh or a cringe...
Many many moons ago when petrol was 65c i paid for a sports exhaust and had the injectors cleaned out properly (Saw the before and after spray shots and there was a difference).
It ran great and when i asked what they did, the guy said they tricked the computer into thinking it was at a higher altitude, aka more fuel..
A full tank now only gets me to about 300kms, before the orange light comes on.
Live on the Gold coast with not any 30min traffic jam driving as such.
Now i don't know if this 'higher altitude stuff' was BS and (now i feel like an idiot), i didn't care at 65c pl, but now at $1.60 a liter i do now.
I hardly used the car for many years as i had my motor bikes. But now i have had an injury whereby i have to use the car all the time for the next few years.
A few years back, i brought this excessive fuel consumption up with the local mitsi wreckers/mechanics place and they told my MAF must be faulty.
So they fitted one (used), and it rally didn't seem to make much difference. After a few months i go them to change it and that didn't make any difference. Another MAF made the car run really rough.
A brand new MAF around these times were costing around $300-$500 and i couldn't afford them.
Anyway, so i bought a brand new OEM MAF for $80 off eBay two weeks ago. Has the same Mit and Japan stuff on it.
So some questions before i fit it:
1) It has this rubber gasket with different sized nobbly bits off it that look like purposely molded to fit a certain way. There does not seem to be any recesses in the MAF moulding to accommodate these lumpy bits.
Should i cut them off?
1a), And a DOH question; In the photo, have i got it placed correctly?
1b), And another DOH one, i can't recall seeing this rubber seal on any of the second hand MAF's i have fitted. Is it possible that if this seal is not on, could any air leaks cause my excessive fuel?
2) How do i test that this new MAF is working ok?
3) If it is working ok and i still have bad fuel consumption - what could the people have done who fitted the exhaust done to the engine or ECU or whatever to make the car use more 'altitude fuel'- how can i find out?
So many thanks for taking the time to read through all this. I know it's a shit box and only worth $500, but it still runs and starts first time.
Unfortunately, I don't have much choice for a good while and I think it's costing me about $20pw in additional fuel that the car should be using so the new MAF was cheap to eliminate it as the problem.
Thanks,
Alan.
